Business feature of the week

By Vicki Winger

Our downtown business core has changed dramatically over the years as businesses close their doors. One business that’s remained a constant throughout is Whitecourt Work Wear & Ladies Boutique. The store has been in operation for over 30 years and has seen a few changes in ownership over the decades. Sandi Bilau has owned it for the past six years and attributes the longevity of the business to its customer service, quality, and selection of products. She said, “We try to look after all walks of life and all budgets. We try to keep prices lower than you’d find in Edmonton but keep good quality. It’s a family store where we can dress you from top to bottom. Our goal is to be versatile in selection for men, women, and children.”

One area that’s been gradually expanding is its fashion accessories and line of footwear. You can find everything from children’s all seasonal footwear to ladies’ high heels and running shoes. Bilau’s store is now divided equally between casual wear and safety wear geared for the industrial worker. Whitecourt Work Wear & Ladies Boutique prides itself on having one of the largest selections of work boots and the lowest price for fire-retardant coveralls.

Bilau has been very strategic when it comes to stocking her store. When the oilfield declined, and Albertans weren’t working as much, she leaned more to clothing for women who work in offices or banks. Bilau’s changes as the needs of the community change.

Fashion is always changing with the seasons. Typically, once out of a clothing design, it can’t be ordered again as clothes are ordered one year in advance. Every six months Bilau attends the fashion buying shows to pick out her products. Bilau has a keen eye and brings in unique items that you won’t find elsewhere in town. Even though it’s only spring, they have been working on bringing in the 2019/20 winter items. The products are only available for a limited time so if you want to stay in fashion, you need to be on top of it.

“A major factor in retail success is the staff. Whitecourt Work Wear & Ladies Boutique has had a very low turnover during its years in business. We’re always here to help. If you’re not sure what looks good, we will dress you from head to toe. Our staff has a lot of training on what looks good on someone. We want our customers to feel beautiful when they walk out the door. That’s our goal. When it comes to men’s work boots, we want to ensure a proper fit and will be comfortable to wear for long periods. I’m very proud of the staff we have and the lengths they go to for our customers. We also embroider and heat press on site. It’s ideal for those who only want one or two hats or shirts. You can also get your child’s name put on his or her gloves or mitts. The store also offers contract pricing for coveralls and all workwear-related items,” said Bilau.

The Whitecourt Work Wear & Ladies Boutique is a one-stop shop for the whole family!
