Mexican Fiesta fun at the Whitecourt Curling Club

The Annual Mixed Doubles Bonspiel was held at the Whitecourt Curling Club from March 23 to 25. With 20 teams taking part, the weekend event kept everyone busy as games continuously took place one after another. Each bonspiel put on by the club features a fun theme for players to get into and this year’s theme for the mixed tournament was Mexican Fiesta.

Sam Vrolson has been curling in Whitecourt for roughly five years and, in general, for over 19 years. She said the social aspect of curling was a big draw for her when she first started, and that the local curling community is very welcoming. “It’s a very close-knit community and it’s growing, as well. We are seeing a lot more younger teams coming up which is nice. Anyone of any skill can come out and have fun and, because it’s a small community, everyone is welcome. There is no pressure, just fun.”

For younger families, Sam said it’s nice to know that her children are okay to watch her play from upstairs allowing her to take part. A range of ages could be seen amongst the teams as both newbies and veteran players played side by side, learning from each other.

The first mixed bonspiel in Whitecourt was held in 1971 and with many young curlers joining in and trying out the sport, the community continues to grow each year. Running from October until the end of March, the mixed bonspiel is the final tournament of the season for the Whitecourt Curling Club.

For next season, Sam encourages Whitecourt residents to get out and give it a shot. “You don’t have to have skill to play, just come out and have fun. There is also a junior program for younger kids who want to start out. It’s a great sport for anyone of any age and skill level.”
