Fine Arts at Hilltop High School

By Vicki Winger

The Whitecourt Hilltop High School held its Fine Arts Night in conjunction with parent-teacher interviews on March 12. It’s been an ongoing tradition with the school and is typically held each spring. It’s an opportunity for students in grades nine through 12 to showcase their completed work in their CTS courses (option courses). Projects were on display that were made from the fabrication/art and construction classes. There were a variety of items from canvas paintings and metal works to beautifully hand-crafted wood tables. Some of the students’ work is for sale to the general public. For anyone interested, contact the high school at 780-778-2446 for further details.

The 2019 graduation class also held a cake auction sale. The baked items were on display for those wishing to place a bid. All money raised from the auction will go towards grad day for decorations and other items required.

Natalie Christianson, School Community Liaison and Grad Advisor, said, “Fine Arts Night is such simplicity for some students. They make the work for fun and I feel they don’t realize just how good they are sometimes.” Caleb Tobin, from the fabrication class in grade 11 had his project, a toolbox, on display. Tobin explained how he created it. “I started with a sheet of metal, determined the dimensions needed, then drew all the pieces out. Once that’s complete, it’s cut out, folded, and welded together. The only other tools I used were a vise/bending machine to make the creases, then spot welded all the ends.” Tobin has created a variety of items in his class from screwdrivers to meat tenderizers. “Fabrication is a fun class where I learned a lot; it will be useful in the future,” he added.
