It has been 10 years since Mayerthorpe was devastated by the loss of four of its RCMP officers. Since then, the Fallen Four Marathon has honoured their memory by hosting an athletic event that supports the community. This year, the event runs on June 6 and 7, and it’s not too late to register.
The events will feature a kids’ marathon, a five-km walk/run through Whitecourt, a half and a full marathon, and a two- or four person relay race. “The kids’ marathon is more about the sense of completion,” said Chair Tina Prodaniuk. “They have six weeks to cover the distance of a marathon and finish the final 2.2 km on the day of the event, on the Saturday at 9 a.m.”
Opening ceremonies will feature an F-18 flyby and a 12-person formation jump by the Skyhawks, the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team. This is happening at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6 at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre, and again at 6:45 a.m. at the Fallen Four Memorial Park in Mayerthorpe.
Events in Whitecourt on Saturday include the five-km run/walk, the kids’ marathon and a free pasta dinner at the Eagle River Casino for participants. On Sunday, the full marathon, half marathon, and the relay races begin bright and early at 6:45 at the Fallen Four Park.
