“Shine” Summer Camp is on this week in Whitecourt

By Laura Bohnert

Summer is coming to an end which means your kids are probably adamantly in denial but, also, bored out of their wee skulls. If you are looking to involve your kids in some daytime activities, look no further than “Shine” Summer Camp.

Hosted by Skyview Alliance Church in Whitecourt, “Shine” Summer Camp is a day camp for kids aged three to 10 who want to learn about how we can shine in God’s light.

“Shine” Summer Camp started Monday, August 17 and runs to Friday, August 21. Registration began on Monday at 8:30 a.m.; however, parents are still able to register their kids in the summer camp for the week, or for just a day. The day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily.

“Shine” Summer Camp, which is run by local volunteers, is open to the whole community, age grouped from pre-school to grade five. The kids are separated into groups based on their ages: “there is a separate pre-school program, and grades one to five are all grouped individually,” explains Kid Zone Volunteer Kim Tschigerl.

“The kids go through a rotation where they play games, build crafts, have snacks, sing fun songs, learn a bible story, and have a general good time all together,” Tschigerl continues.

“It’s all about getting kids together to learn about God and about ways to shine God’s love back to him,” states Tschigerl. “Shine Summer Camp is a fun time for children to learn about God while experiencing new friends and activities.”

“Programs like this are important so the kids learn about God, learn about love for each other, and about how to give praise back to the Heavenly Father,” quotes Tschigerl. “These days, children are bombarded with messages from the world at a constant pace, and events like our summer camp give us an opportunity to combat these messages with the sword of the spirit.”

The cost of “Shine” Summer Camp is $20 per child, or $40 per family, for the week.

The summer camp also incorporates a fundraiser for Wellspring, Whitecourt’s Family Resource and Crisis Centre. Parents and kids are encouraged to bring in school supplies to donate to Wellspring’s families.

Skyview Alliance Church is located six kms SE of Whitecourt on Hwy 43. “Turn south on RR113, then left on the service road,” explains Tschigerl.
