Former local artist plans tour

Curtis “Theory of Syntax” Dengler is a name you may recognize for several reasons. Dengler was a Whitecourt business owner who ran a recording studio downtown, and he is a performer. Some may remember him from his involvement in promoting and organizing the August 27th Hip-hop charity showcase here in Whitecourt that featured local artist T-Co, who Dengler worked with in his studio downtown. But where is Dengler now?

“At the age of 20 I moved to Vancouver where I earned a diploma in Recording and Sound Design. I’ve been performing and promoting shows across western Canada for the past eight years now, and after being offered a spot in a showcase and performing in Montreal, I decided to move to Edmonton where I have lived the past three years.”

And what’s he been up to? Well, the multitalented artist has been working on records, releasing two over the past year entitled “Where Words Fail, Music Speaks” and a collaboration album “One Word” that he worked on with Saskatoon artist, JP. Other than being in the creative groove, he has also been hard at work getting his own label, Bookshelf Records, up and running.

Dengler got involved with working with at-risk youth during his time at school in BC, and brought that same work back with him to Whitecourt which he funneled through his studio in the form of a youth workshop and, although he is in Edmonton now, his charitable work has continued.
“In the words of Winston Churchill, ‘be the change that you want to see in the world.’ I believe in giving back and the fact that I get to do it through my music (which is my passion) makes it even better, so myself and Bookshelf Records are very charity based.

I chose mental health as my main charity because I feel it’s an under-rated issue in society today; suicide, drug addiction, and criminality all have direct links to mental health problems. Instead of judging people we need to understand people.”
The future of Dengler and Bookshelf Records is a busy one as he finds himself in the studio working on new records of his own, and planning a Western Canada tour. You can keep up to date with Curtis and his music by joining him on Facebook at www.facebook.con/syntaxfamily or his website www.reverbnation.com/syntaxfamily.

Are there any plans for him to return to Whitecourt? “Whitecourt is where I was raised; it’s my home. I always come back.”
