Canada Day parade planning has begun – volunteers are needed

By Rechell McDonald
It might seem too soon but it’s not, says Elaine McDermid of the Community Volunteers who is organizing the Canada Day parade this year. “We are in need of volunteers for security, traffic control, to act as guides during the event, and to hand out goodies and Canada Day paraphernalia during the parade. We have submitted the route plans to the town and are just waiting on its decision before we can press on further.”
As it is still early in the year, not many participants have been lined up just yet, but the Legion and the Boy Scouts are some of the early bird participants this year. The event, which requires much planning and volunteer power, requires an early start to preparations to ensure things flow smoothly during the parade. Last year’s parade saw 33 participating groups, and this year McDermid says they are shooting for 50 which will result in about a 30-minute long parade. The parade route is still a secret while McDermid and fellow organizers await the town’s decision on their proposed route, giving ample time to make any alterations that may be requested.
McDermid reminds residents that there is no fee to enter to be part of the parade. Participants are simply asked to dawn this nation’s colours, decorate a vehicle of any sort, and bring out their families, children, and even pets to have a great time. The parade is scheduled for 9 a.m. on July 1 which falls on a Friday this year.
The whole town is encouraged to come out and participate as either a volunteer, entrant, judge, or committee member – or simply to watch the procession! More details of the event will be made public as plans and participants are solidified in the coming months.
