Rocky’s House of Horror

haunted-houseEveryone has a holiday that they really get into and, for Roxanne and Phil Morlidge, the holiday is Halloween. “Roxanne has probably been collecting for 15 years. It started in our yard and just grew from there,” said Phil, in speaking of his wife’s love for all things spooky.

Nine of the last 10 years, the twosome has donated their horrific trove of scary treasures and set up Rocky’s House of Horror in support of The Boys and Girls Club, donating all proceeds to the club. The longtime residents are very excited to be back after taking last year off, using the time to create new specimens that they are dying to show. “My favourite part is scaring people. It’s a lot of work but the fun of scaring is the best. The giggles and screams are so awesome,” said Roxanne. Though, technically, there isn’t an age limit, she reminds parents that it’s a pretty intense experience that they don’t recommend for young children. Ultimately, parents will need to decide if their children can handle it. “We aren’t going to go easy on anyone who comes through. We are here to scare you and we will scare you.”

Cathy Branton, director of the Whitecourt Boys and Girls Club, is very grateful for the support from Phil and Roxanne in donating the decor, as well as their time. Club volunteers work at the haunted house each year.  They organize, help set up, manage the people who work in the house while it’s open, and help with the takedown once it wraps. “Remax helped us big time with finding us the location where we are now. We really appreciate it,” said Cathy.

When asked what area of the scare fest is her absolute favourite, Cathy didn’t even have to pause. “My favourite area is definitely the doctor’s room because it has body parts, eyeballs, large intestines, things in the wall, freaky tools, even a gurney with a patient! You have to see what they are doing to the patient,” she said with a laugh. “Some of the stuff is authentic so it makes it that much scarier,” she added.

At $6 per person, it’s an affordable fright to get into. Enjoy letting out a good scream? Want to feel your heart beating out of your chest? Then don’t miss Rocky’s House of Horror! It’s located at 4105-41 Avenue directly across the street from Crystal Glass in the parking lot with Alta Tech Environmental Services. It will be open to the public Monday, October 24 until Friday, October 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.

One of the new creations is so elaborate that it must be seen. People will definitely be talking about it after… so don’t miss out!
