The 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness Bra Toss Wolverines Game Night was held recently at the Scott Safety Centre against the Calgary Canucks. Fans were encouraged to dress in pink and bring along bras, too. The moment the Wolverines scored their first goal of the night, fans were told to toss them over the glass, raining them down onto the ice. All bras were then donated to “Bras across the Bridge” and, for every bra, $1 will be donated to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
The game started at 7:30 p.m. following a ceremonial puck drop with two inspirational women. Kristin Dowsett and Rhonda Mckinnon were celebrated for their courageous battles with cancer. After hearing about the devastating struggles both have endured from diagnosis to multiple difficult treatments, and the loving support that has boosted them to fight each day, the fans in attendance gave them a massive cheer. It was truly inspirational for everyone to share in the moment!
At 10:36 of the 1st period, #3 Noah Tooke scored, enjoying two firsts: his first goal of the season and the first of the game. Bras of all shapes and colours littered the ice as play paused to allow time for the referees to scoop them up.
A furious rush with five minutes left in the 2nd period saw Wolverines goalie Liam McCorskey standing on his head making several amazing saves, thrilling the fans in the process. That excitement propelled the boys into the Canucks zone only seconds later scoring their 3rd and final goal of the night.
Unfortunately, it was all Canucks after that as they scored four unanswered goals lifting them to a 4-3 overtime win.
