Whitecourt Trade Fair coming up

By Reed Clements

The annual Whitecourt Trade Fair will take place at the Scott Safety Centre and Whitecourt Curling Rink on the weekend of May 12 to 14 this year.

The event, which is hosted by the Whitecourt and District Chamber of Commerce, seeks to provide members of the community a chance to learn about local projects and initiatives. It also features vendors and entertainment, including a free pancake breakfast on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Overtime Grill.

This year, the Town of Whitecourt will feature its projects at two booths. One will promote the local beautification work of Whitecourt’s Communities in Bloom Committee, whose work in the community won the national Communities in Bloom competition in 2015 for the 6,001 to 11,000 population category.

At the other booth, the Town will continue to promote the May 7 to 13 Emergency Preparedness Week, educating people about how to handle emergencies and the value of having a 72-hour preparedness kit.

This will include an effort to advise people about the sorts of documents, such as insurance forms and contact information, that they should include in their kits.

There will be a draw to win prizes, including emergency preparedness kits, for all those who show up to the booth and download the province’s free emergency preparedness apps, Albert Alert and Alberta Wildfire. These apps will be critical tools in case of an emergency, serving as lines of communication from both the provincial and municipal governments to civilians.

The Trade Fair will begin on Friday May 12 at 5 p.m. and run until 9. The Fair will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and wrap up on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children and seniors, with children under two years of age admitted free.
