Bikers on a mission

Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) made a presence at the Whitecourt Court House July 12 to be present and give support for a trial involving child abuse. Although BACA can’t share its cases or statistics, there has been a large increase over the last few years and BACA is quite active in the Whitecourt area.

 

BACA was founded in Utah in 1995. It’s a non-profit organization and has become worldwide. BACA takes a firm stand against all forms of child abuse including physical, sexual, emotional, along with child pornography.

 

The Alberta and Edmonton president who’s referred to as “Boomer” states that a lot of child abuse goes unreported for many reasons such as victims not being believed or being afraid to come forward. BACA exists with the intent to create a safer environment, improve confidence, and restore victims’ self-worth. “Our mission is to empower abused children,” claims Boomer.

 

There are many organizations available for victims of child abuse such as RCMP, Victim Services, Social Services, and counsellors. While BACA acknowledges the need for them, Boomer states most just don’t have the resources to be there for the children around the clock if it’s necessary. BACA volunteers may be called upon at any given time by these children and remain in close contact. “Whether a victim feels afraid, threatened, needs to be present for court or parole hearings, or just wants to talk on the phone, the child feels safer knowing his or her “biker family” will be there and to not fear their abuser,” says Boomer. BACA also maintains a therapy fund for any of their children requiring additional assistance.
