Poppy Drive in full swing

By Vicki Winger

The Cub Scouts, Girl Guides, Army Cadets, and Air Cadets sponsored by the Whitecourt Legion Branch #44 kicked off their Poppy Drive on Saturday, October 28 and will continue till September 11. The clubs will be making their rounds to local businesses for the poppies and wreathes. “Donations are accepted year-round and not just during the Poppy Drive,” said Legion President Kyle Scott. Prior to the clubs heading out, it has been tradition to pin the first poppy on the mayor.

The poppies are a symbol of remembrance to those who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their country. “The basic purpose of the Poppy Fund is to provide immediate assistance to veterans and their families whether it’s for financial need, care facility costs, mental or medical assistance, or basic needs such as clothing, food, and shelter,” said Scott. He is making every attempt to reach out to local veterans, young and old. He encourages them to step forward should they need help. “I am available to those who wish to reach out and talk whether they communicate by Facebook, phone, or stop in at the Legion Thursday to Saturday. The government has its shortfalls, but this is where the Legion can step in and help our veterans. It is an advocate for our veterans and the Legion holds the government accountable to ensure they are looked after when they come back from service,” said Scott.
