Just Christmas Tea and Bake Sale with the United Church

 

 

Do something for the world this Christmas! And for yourself, of course. The United Church is holding their annual Just Christmas Tea and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 25 at the Church and you will be able to help yourself, and the global community.

In addition to enjoying tea and a sweet with your friends, on Saturday, you will also be able to purchase lovely Christmas ornaments, from organizations that will help people around the world have a better life. The store Ten Thousand Villages that buys crafts and products made by and sourced from the global village and communities throughout the developing world.  They are lovely and fit in well with our lifestyle as well. They have beautiful items for Christmas, and according to the website, “Every purchase improves the lives of the makers by supporting their craft and providing a fair, stable income.”

People are looking to put their dollars where it counts,” said organizer Vickie Quinn from the United Church. “Our Church has always had a focus on justice and service to others. At our Christmas sale is one of the ways that people can get more than just a Christmas present.

You will also be able to buy lovely glass Christmas ornaments. The money from the purchase of one of these ornaments goes to purchase a dignity kit for a girl in a developing country so that she can stay in school, and will not have to miss out on her education because she cannot afford the needed personal hygiene supplies.

You will be able to get all your Christmas Shopping done at the sale, as well as have a pleasant afternoon with friends. Ten Thousand Villages will be bringing items like Nativity Scenes and other Christmas ornaments, jewellery, scarves and other items. Visit their website for more information about what they do. “The proceeds go back to the community,” said Quinn and the items are fair-trade sourced. The artisans receive a decent wage for the products they produce and only recycled or local materials are used. People can be sure that they are not buying items made using child labour or slave labour.”
