Yes, the elections have passed, but there is still a chance for one Whitecourt student in middle school and one student in high school to get a feel for the job and be Mayor for a Day! If you have a great idea for a change you would like to see in Whitecourt, within possibility of course, then let the people who can make it happen know about it. They want to hear what you think. And, it’s a wonderful experience for the students as well.
“A great idea can come from anywhere,” said FCSS coordinator Fay Arcand. In the application form that is available at www.whitecourt.ca there is a space for the ‘mayoral candidate’ to write a small essay explaining their idea for how the town can be enhanced and what challenge that idea will address. Maybe you have an idea to improve utilities in town, or garbage pickup or anything at all.
One student from each of the two age groups will be offered an opportunity to job shadow with Mayor Chichak for one day in March. The day will likely include a tour of the town facilities in the morning, business meetings in the afternoon and a council meeting in the evening. There is also a small prize included.
“This is the third time we have done this and it’s very popular,” said Arcand. “It’s also a wonderful experience for everyone.”
Don’t forget to get the applications in by December 4. Contact Fay Arcand at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre if you have any further questions.
