Wolverines see impressive win streak end as they prepare for a southern road trip

The Whitecourt Wolverines have been rolling along very nicely this season, and have proven to be a thundering and dominating force in the AJHL North. After establishing an impressive and record breaking 11 wins in a row, including the November 14 3-1 home game victory against the Sherwood Park Crusaders (pictured), the Wolverines saw their streak come to an unfortunate end.

On Friday, November 17, the second of three home games in one week, the Spruce Grove Saints brought their league’s best penalty kill into the Scott Safety Centre.  Scoring two goals in the first six minutes of the first period helped the Saints control the game from start to finish.  Three power plays in the second period were not enough for the Wolverines to break through. Though they were able to get on the board in the final frame, it was too little too late to solve the Saints who took the win 3-1.

The loss was just a small hiccup for the Wolverines, though, as they turned around the very next night against the Camrose Kodiaks. The first 20 minutes saw two power plays for each squad but neither team could capitalize on them. Into the second, the home team was able to snipe one by the Kodiaks’ netminder as Stevie Bryant set up Liam Motley with a beauty of a pass. Motley’s goal would be the only one in the game as the Wolverines got themselves right back into the win column taking it 1-0.  The home team now sits with 18 wins and 39 points on the season.

The next action for the Wolverines will be on the road against three teams in the AJHL South. First up is the Camrose Eagles on November 24 followed by the Calgary Canucks on the 25th and the Calgary Mustangs on the 26th. Local fans will have to patiently wait until Saturday, December 2 for the next home game when the boys will take on the Sherwood Park Crusaders. The Wolverines will undoubtedly be looking for a bit of on-ice retribution.
