The community comes out to have fun at Chamber’s annual children’s event

Whether you are under 18 or just a kid at heart, the annual Christmas Is for Kids event, held by the Whitecourt & District Chamber of Commerce is always a must-attend event every holiday season. Just the sheer number of volunteer hours alone shows just how much the Chamber members put into the extravaganza which is provided to the community as a fun, free event for families.

Thanks to mild November weather, and just like the previous evening at the parade, Whitecourt residents came out in droves on November 25 at the Royal Canadian Legion. The place was completely packed from wall to wall as attendees lined up for cookies, hot dogs, and hamburgers, or to have their faces painted. On the tables were crafts to do including a reindeer lollipop holder which featured a lot of sparkly, glitter glue.

Outside, there was a warm and inviting bonfire lit and yummy marshmallows ready to roast. A big favourite was also there as Cactus Patch Ranch had four beautiful horses and two big wagons ready to take everyone on a quick jaunt around the block. Getting to see downtown Whitecourt from the vantage point of a wagon while you listen to the “clip clop” sounds of the horses and the bells on their guides, is certainly a wonderful tradition to experience each year.

“It’s a real community event and for our directors this is probably one of their favourite events the whole year as it gets everybody into the Christmas spirit,” said Chamber Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Jones. “It’s also great to see the contributions from all the businesses that have helped make the donations, and help us to continue to make this a free event. We couldn’t do it without our volunteers and the whole community.”

No matter where you were, outside in the lineup waiting to go on a ride or inside making a craft, you could see smiles everywhere as families enjoyed spending time together.  Suddenly, “Ho! Ho! Ho!” could be heard as a familiar voice filled the room. Squeals of excitement began to erupt as the children caught a glimpse of Santa Claus as he made his way up onto the stage for picture time.

“It’s been an incredible turnout, both last night (parade) and today. The weather has certainly helped. The place is absolutely full, and everyone seems to be really happy and excited about being here,” said Michelle with a big smile. Thank you to the Chamber, businesses, and all the volunteers for putting on another great event which was fun for all.
