The gym at École St. Mary School was filled with angelic voices on December 13 and 14 as the classes put on their annual Christmas concert. Held on two days, the concert always brings out a huge crowd that cannot be contained in the gym. By doing it on back-to-back days, everyone who wants to come watch can do so.
This year’s theme was Shepherds, Stars, and a Saviour, and featured several young children dressed up and narrating a story to the audience. The mixed choir opened the concert following O Canada and prayer by singing Follow the Star and Christmas at the Hop.
Next up on the stage were 2T, 2N, 2F, and 2D as they performed a beautiful rendition of Here Comes Christmas. The children did exceptionally well in following concert director Maureen Ulliac as she guided her pupils through the song.
Next up was 1S, 1D, 1K, KQ, and KF with What Does It Take? For those who didn’t have a chance to attend the concert or who would like to see this performance again, check out the Whitecourt Press Facebook page as it is posted there.
Another performance that is showcased on the Facebook page is the 3D and 3Z black light number! It’s a favourite each year as the children work hard to stay with the music and lift certain objects at the perfect moment so they can glow in the black light.
Les Anges Dans Nos Compagnes was sung by the KL, 1P, 2R, and 3Z classes, and Miracle at Midnight was performed by 3N, 3M, 3G, KB, and KM. The final musical number for the evening was Here Comes Christmas which featured many of the children.
Music teacher and concert director Maureen Ulliac said she is always excitedly nervous each year. “I love when they come up and they smile, and they enjoy it. It’s nice to see the kids in a different setting and not just in their classrooms. When they come up to perform it’s just another amazing way for them to express themselves creatively.”
Another shining light at this year’s event was that sales of the 50/50 raffle tickets were over double that of previous years. The money goes towards fundraising projects at the school. “It’s really amazing,” said Maureen, adding, “remember that Jesus is the reason for the season and that’s why we’re here. Merry Christmas to everyone and have a safe and blessed holiday from everyone at École St. Mary School.”
