Cats kick off the season with a win

By Vicki Winger

Football season has kicked off, and the Whitecourt Cats are back on the field. “It’s great to see the veteran players come back as well as seeing new teammates,” said Head Coach Kevin Babiuk.

The first game of the season had the Cats travelling to Grande Prairie on August 30 to play against the Warriors. It was a tough, close game in the first half; however, the longer the game went on, the more the Cats widened the score margins. “It took the team a little time to get their legs under them. The warriors are a much-improved team and they gave us more of a fight than they did last year. I was quite impressed. Both our teams have great players,” Babiuk said. The final score at game end was 22-6 for the Whitecourt Cats.

The Whitecourt Cats’ decade-run program of selling Cats sponsor cards that gives cardholders discounts at supporting businesses assists with the financial costs for the team to travel. “The team players should be starting to get cards this week and the big blitz to sell them will happen closer to the end of September,” Babiuk said. Residents can expect the players to be going door to door during this time.

“The program is important as the Whitecourt Cats have some high costs,” he added. The Cats travel more than any other team in the league as most of their competitors live in the Peace region. Their next official game will be a home game against the High Prairie Renegades on September 14.
