From September 4 to 7 the Allan & Jean Millar Centre celebrated its members and 10th birthday in grand style. Pick Your Fit Week gives everyone the opportunity to try out the fitness classes available at the centre without committing to them. With short snippets of each, and full-length classes, residents could try out the different opportunities made available to both members and non-members who utilize the AJMC.
“This week was a special week for us. We celebrated members with free fitness classes all week long and had lots of fun prizes for everyone to win. We encouraged non-members to come and try the classes because they could do so without registration,” explained Jolene Rarick, Fitness Co-ordinator at the AJMC.
She said all the instructors were excited to celebrate the milestone with the community and have a lot of fun in the process. On Wednesday, September 5 a big stage was set up in the fieldhouse and lights were strewn overhead creating a very different atmosphere in the space. One by one the different instructors took to the stage to walk the large crowd of over 60 people, both children, and adults, through the different types of classes.
“Our Fitness Madness night was great. Our entire fitness team has pulled it off, and not only our team but also the teams within the town have helped make this happen.” The evening event allowed all ages to work out together. “Lots of times the fitness classes we offer are for over age 13 or 16 so having all ages tonight was nice. We don’t often have something that is for the whole family, so this was our time to celebrate fun, family, and fitness. That is our motto, and we wanted to have a lot of fun, and we did!”
During the Wednesday night Fitness Madness, goers were provided with everything they needed to take part in Tabata, H.I.I.T. the Deck, Metabolic Flow, Pound, Fired Up, and Yoga Fusion. “It’s nice to have that little sample of everything,” said Rarick. For anyone who missed out on the opportunity, she said you can still sample classes. “We have complimentary classes that are offered throughout the week all year long, so they are welcome to check those out. They don’t have to register to do that; they can drop in.”
She said for those interested in registered classes they can sit in on a class and see what it’s all about. “They are always welcome to come in and try it out because they may not like it, or they might enjoy it. We let them try it out, and it isn’t a problem at all.” Another option is the Bring A Friend Night that takes place often. “If you know a friend who wants to try something but is a little scared to jump in then you can bring him or her with you to try it out that way.”
Rarick said the big crowd in the fieldhouse was a sight to behold and that she couldn’t have asked for anything better. “It was fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout tonight. I couldn’t believe it. I know it’s a crazy week for everyone with back to school and sports starting up, so I’m really glad that people took time out of their day to come and join us.”
To see a full list of the classes that run at the AJMC, and when, grab a copy of the new Spectrum. “You do not have to be a member to register and take part in a class. Some people only come to the classes and don’t want the membership.” The Spectrum can be found in the lobby at the AJMC.
