On October 25, students and parents gathered around the gymnasium of Hilltop High School to partake in the 2017/2018 Academic Awards Ceremony. Award winners from grades nine to 12 were called up on stage to receive their awards by the Mistress of Ceremonies and the assistant principle, Sarah Van De Kerckhove. The amount of achievements and awards received by students was incredible. Over 150 students received an award for placing the highest in not only the compulsory courses, but also the complementary ones including work experience and the RAP program.
The Grade Valedictorian is an award that is received based on the student’s average mark on the four core courses. This is the second year this award has been offered at Hilltop High. This year’s Grade Valedictorian recipients are Irene Myung – grade 9, Emma Schlosser – grade 10, Adam Cunningham – grade 11, and Logan Seu – grade 12.
The Student of The Year award is calculated on a point system regarding academics, school involvement, attendance, and attitude. The Student of the Year award was received by Samantha Rhynold for junior high, and Mark Bell for senior high.
The 2017/2018 Governors General’s Academic Excellence Medal was awarded to Logan Seu. This award is the most prestigious award that can be received by any high school student. Logan Seu is now attending University in another province so he was not present to receive his award in person.
