To Mars and Beyond

By Vicki Winger

During Easter break, the Family Worship Centre held a To Mars and Beyond Space Camp for children from ages five to grade six. This is the first time the church has held an Easter break day camp which ran from April 23 to April 26. It was nothing short of an adventure, creativity, and Bible stories. The children were kept busy doing science experiments including slime and lava lamps, crafts of claybots and suncatchers, movies and, of course, snacks. As the theme was space, the church was brightly decorated with images from outer space, coloured planets on the walls, and lights strung up throughout. The best part, though, was checking out the rocket that sits permanently just inside the entrance doors to the church.

Children’s Pastor Gina Sweitzer said, “We wanted to do an activity for the kids that would give them something to do on spring break. We chose the space theme as we have the rocket at our church entrance which we call the launch pad for the kids’ ministries upstairs. It started out by a little girl who dreamed the church had a rocket in it. She’d imagined outer space pictures along with it. From there, the rocket was built, and many artists painted space images and colourful planets that we hung on the walls to fulfill her dream.”

With the success of the day camp, Sweitzer hopes to have it annually. The Worship Centre plans to hold more events throughout the year. Check out the Whitecourt Family Worship Centre on Facebook for more information.
