A barbecue and crib tournament were held at the Seniors Circle last Saturday to cap off this year’s annual Seniors’ Week events. With a slight chill in the air, a few hours of playing cards proved to be the perfect way to spend the afternoon.
After enjoying a delicious barbecue lunch, the seniors assembled into groups of four to a table for the crib tournament. Players slapped down cards with gleeful or serious faces while filling the room with light chatter.
Youth Advisory Committee members Maddy Martell and Thanh Pham attended the event, ready to assist in any way they could. With both girls being novices to the game themselves, Family and Community Support Services Program Co-ordinator Fay Arcand made sure to give a crash course on playing crib.
Mayor Maryann Chichak was also present happily taking part in the tournament. “It’s nice to be able to recognize this group throughout the week even though we appreciate them throughout the year,” she said. Although Chichak was not a novice to crib, she admitted that she had her “butt kicked” during the first round of the tournament.
Crib tournament participator Terry Ryder was in great spirits even though she admitted her first game didn’t play out in her favour. “Oh, it’s fun,” she said, laughing with her friends.
FCSS Program Co-ordinator Fay Arcand said Seniors’ Week, as part of a province-wide initiative, is an amazing way to recognize and appreciate the services seniors put into the community. As the week’s events were community wide, everyone was invited to participate in all that was offered. Collaborating with Service Credit Union, Rotary Club, and the Seniors Circle, Arcand explained how they were able to stretch the budget and put on some fantastic events. Arcand noted that new events such as the river walk earlier in the week, complete with erosion mitigation trivia, was well received as was the Resource Trade Fair. She was thankful for the Youth Advisory volunteers who helped set up and clean up after for the dinner and dance on Friday evening.
