Party in the Park was a smash this past weekend with people coming in droves to enjoy the kid-friendly fun during the day, and some live music in the evening. This year’s games and activities included bouncy castles, bubble ball games, face painting, balloon art, a juggler, and much more. Food trucks were lined up for everyone to sample mini doughnuts, donairs, poutine, Mediterranean food, and ice cream. There were also some big names within the musical line-up including Coleman Hell headlining on Friday evening, and Doc Walker the next night.
Attendees Sam Anderson and Kendra Van Gundy were impressed with the audience turnout commenting that it was probably the largest audience they had seen at Party in the Park in a few years. Artists such as Renegade Station and Canadian Coldwater Revival also took the stage providing a range of classic, current, country, rock, and even Celtic music ensuring a little something for everyone.
Canadian artist, Coleman Hell, brought his energy and vigour to the stage calling everyone sitting to come and dance in front of the stage. As an artist featured in the top 40 with hits like 2 Heads and Fireproof, Hell’s sound is somewhat different from the usual country artists so often featured in Whitecourt. Yet, the change was readily welcomed as people of all ages rushed up to dance and jump along with the singer.
Country music band Doc Walker headlined on Saturday night, setting a much more relaxed vibe for Party in the Park goers providing the perfect ending for the weekend.
Mayor Maryann Chichak and Woodlands County Councillor Jim Rennie introduced the band and commended the amazing turnout for the show. As small-town kids themselves, Doc Walker fit right in with Whitecourt. “Sociables! This is just iced tea by the way,” said lead singer Chris Thorsteinson holding his glass up to the audience. With well-sunned faces, and kids just starting to yawn and stretch from a day of continuous play, the audience settled back to listen to songs about “crazy women and whiskey.”
With so many activities and entertainment available, Party in the Park is truly a weekend for everyone. “This is a great event! It has family stuff in the afternoon, and then we come here at night,” said attendee Carizza Perrin.
It’s no secret that Whitecourt Woodlands Tourism and the Whitecourt & Woodlands Performing Arts Society hit it out of the park this year. With the help of their many sponsors, both organizations provided the perfect welcome to summer. After this success, what’s in store for Party in the Park 2020 is anyone’s guess.
