Five wins in a row, baby!

The Wolverines had a pair of games at the Scott Safety Centre this weekend and extended their points streak to five straight games. On Saturday, January 25, they welcomed the Lloydminster Bobcats into Whitecourt for an evening matchup. After a quick goal by the visitors, just 32 seconds into the game, the momentum seemed to be snuffed out of the Wolverines. At 10:15 of the first period, Bryce Osepchuk gained momentum back for his team and tied things up 1-1.

In the second period, the Wolverines added another goal to their side of the scoreboard and took the lead for the first time in the game. In the third period, the Whitecourt Wolverines continued to build on their momentum and added two more goals. The Bobcats were unable to get back into the game and bowed to the home squad with a final score of 4-1.

Game two came the following day with an afternoon matchup against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The 2:30 p.m. start brought out 567 fans to watch the rivals go head to head. In the first period, on the powerplay, Wolverine Brayden Labant, with assists from Ethan Leyer and Will Spitzer, was the first to strike and get his team on the board.

In the second period, the low scoring game continued in the same fashion with only one goal at the 12:47 mark. Sam Anderson, assisted by Cassidy Bowes and Ryan Wallz, rocketed one past the Barons netminder and made it 2-0. In the third period, the floodgates opened as the Wolverines added in three more goals and took a lead of 5-0.

Whispers of a shutout were dashed just after the 15-minute mark when the Barons capitalized on a powerplay and squeezed one in behind Vincent Duplessis. The Wolverines goalie was nearly perfect for much of the match. The Home Star for the Sunday scrimmage was Kaleb Ergang while the chosen player from Saturday’s game was Adam Sandstrom.

At this point in the season, the Wolverines have 56 points with 25 wins, 15 loses, and six overtime loses. They sit fourth in the Vitera AJHL North and have won eight of the 10 games they have played so far in January. The Wolverines will play the Grande Prairie Storm on Tuesday, January 28 at home and will round out the month on the road in Lloydminster on Friday.
