The Allan & Jean Millar Centre was exploding with excitement and energy Thursday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Local Grade 6 and 7 students from Percy Baxter and École St. Joseph schools combined their physical abilities to engage in an afternoon of Minute to Win it activities.
Hosted by the Whitecourt Youth Advisory Committee, local middle school youth were invited to the inter school games that were created last April during a strategic planning session. The purpose of the games is to bring students together and compete from randomly picked mixed teams from both schools creating connections and friendships that might otherwise not be available to the youth.
Eight Minute to Win it games and a final tug of war were all part of the Student Unity event put on by The Youth Advisory Committee consisting of 10 youth, Mayor Maryann Chichak; Councillor Bill McAree; Fay Arcand, FCSS Program Co-ordinator, and partnering with Emma Harper, Recreation Department Co-ordinator who had a large role in planning the Minute to Win it games.
Cheering, excitement, determination, and high energy cascaded from the Millar Centre arena area as youth tenaciously raced against other teams in fun-filled relay games such as marble rolling and cup stacking. Interested joggers from the top floor of the centre gathered overhead to take in all the active frenzy the students were projecting.
After a final tug of war for the final two teams, the two-hour event was wrapped up with a filling lunch of sandwiches and juices sponsored by Tim Hortons and the Seniors Circle. With such a successful event all are hoping to see many more in the future.
