Almost a Halloween tradition

By Rechell McDonald
Hessie González-Smith moved to Whitecourt with her family from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2008. It was at a Spanish-English school there that she learned all about American history and culture. Despite Halloween not being a recognized part of Dominican culture, it was celebrated at Hessie’s school. It was this that began Hessie’s love affair with Halloween, costumes, and the whole tradition of the day. Once her family relocated, they knew they wanted to go all out for Halloween, and they did.
The first time they hosted a Halloween party was in 2010, and they’ve held one in Whitecourt every year since. Spending three to four weeks to decorate their home and prepare for the party, Hessie took the opportunity to collect donations as admission to the party, and even provide cab rides for those who enjoy themselves a little too much. In the beginning the party consisted of 10 close friends, but has since expanded to 50 or more people: some friends, and some friends-of-friends.
Hessie was sad to say that 2014 was the last year they would be hosting their annual party because they are planning a move to Edmonton in the spring. This (almost) tradition is one that will certainly be missed by all those who made it their go-to event for Halloween.
