Another successful Summer Reading Program for the Whitecourt Library

The Whitecourt District Public Library ended the 2017 Summer Reading Program with a bang on Thursday, August 10 with the 10 to 16 age group. Staff went all out for the kids, decorating the library in all sorts of crazy ways for an amazing scavenger hunt followed by prizes.

Clues were hidden everywhere from inside books, on tables, and even in balloons.   One aisle was turned into a bowling lane where the teens, together in groups, had to try and knock all the pins down to move on to their next clue. Each team member had two turns to try and knock them all down or they had to start over.

The most popular aisle of all was a “laser” obstacle course that brought out the laughs and screams. Staff made it by weaving red yarn back and forth from side to side all the way down the aisle requiring the kids to try and get through it without touching the yarn.  What ensued was hilarious. Kids went from crawling on their knees to sliding on their bellies and stretching their way over and under the yarn.

Following the scavenger hunt, everyone made their way to the back room for prizes.  Those who read the most in the six-week program received bigger prizes including journaling books and movie passes, and everyone received something special for taking part.

Richard Bangma, Library Director, said this year’s summer program was lots of fun. “It has been very good and very active. We’ve had a lot of participants including new ones this year which is great. The kids are excited about reading and they had a lot of fun with all the activities we did.” Throughout the program several guest speakers visited the children including MLA Carlier and Alberta Agriculture and Forestry personnel.

The popular summer program runs from the first week of July to the second week of August and has different age groups: three to five, six to nine, 10 to 16 and 16+. Each group meets once a week. “It’s a great place to come in the summertime when its hot outside,” said Richard, adding with a laugh, “we have air conditioning!”
