The federal election race is heating up as candidates begin to put their names forward. The latest for the Peace River Westlock Riding is 29-year-old Neerlandia resident Arnold Viersen, who is running for the PC nomination.
He told The Rig’s Kasi Johnston that his family has been living in the riding for four generations, and believes in traditional values of hard work and family and the right to know where your food comes from. The land is important and so is the right to hunt on your own property.
As the MP, rural Alberta is one thing that Viersen hopes to bring attention to. “It all starts here,” he said. “It’s where the stuff happens. The economy is driven by farming, oil and gas, and the hospitality and tourism industry. Driving all those things forward is going to be interesting.”
Viersen believes that the upcoming election is going to be interesting as well. Although voter turnout in the region has been low in the past, the change in the political climate in Alberta will likely bring more voters out to the polls.
