The 2018 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships kicked off over the weekend with 14 tournaments across the province. It was an action-packed weekend here in Whitecourt as the Wolverines Atom A Division hosted one of the tournaments at the Scott Safety Centre.
In addition to the ice action, Whitecourt was also chosen to participate in True Spirit of Hockey Day. A local school is hosting some fun activities allowing students to learn about hockey and the teamwork and friendships that can be generated in the sport.
It was a tough day for the Wolverines Atom A’s as they played against High Prairie in the first tournament game. High Prairie took the game with a score of 5-2. Next Atom A face-off was against the CNN Spurs. Although there was a total of 14 penalty minutes throughout the game, the Wolverines took the lead and held it for a narrow win of 5-4.
The third game with the Wolverines against Brooks saw some great plays and teamwork; however, the Wolverines couldn’t pull ahead. Brooks dominated the scoreboard with a final of 9-3.
As of the stats board Saturday, Brooks was well in the lead holding first place with a total of six points followed by CNN, Whitecourt, and High Prairie at fourth overall.
