ParentLink had a bit of spring fever on Saturday, March 24 as dads built birdhouses with their children at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre. Dreaming of better weather with far less snow and more birds, the group used provided tools and wood to build a new decoration for their backyards.
The Guy & I program is a monthly event that invites dads to come out with their kids and do some sort of fun project together. ParentLink provides everything needed to put the projects together, and the events are always free.
ParentLink Program Facilitator Tamara Blackstock said the program is growing in popularity as more dads hear about it. “It’s an opportunity for dads to spend time with their kids in a program they don’t necessarily get to do during the week because they are working. I find that when we do the more hands-on projects with the dads they like to come more because they have something specific that they know they will be doing.”
Tamara said the project was made possible thanks to generous community donations. “The wood needed to build the houses was donated by the Wildlife Fish and Game Association and was cut to size by Home Hardware.” One of the dads who took part was Jeff Klebe and he was joined by his son, Tanner. “It was fun. Good interaction with Tanner and a nice setup here. Tamara does a good job of looking after everything.” Jeff said he looks forward to putting up the birdhouse in their new yard.
With several different events coming up for ParentLink including the Spring Fling on April 28 and the June year-end barbecue, the Guy & I program will be taking a break for the spring and summer and will resume in September. “We would love to have lots of dads come out and become involved in ParentLink. Our programming is free and we always have new and exciting things going on.”
