Catch the Big Apple at the library

By Rechell McDonald
Photographer Corry Pepper’s work is now on display at the library for public viewing. Her work captures the beauty of New York City amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The small collection of images on display are only a sampling of the work she produced while shadowing famous National Geographic Ambassador Joe McNally around the city.
All the shots you will see have not been retouched or edited; they are straight out of Corry’s camera and were an experiment where Corry was attempting to master the use of natural light and the flash on her camera to create the images and feelings she wanted in each picture.
“The showcased images at the library are SOOC (straight out of camera) so that was a bit of a challenge for me, being so used to post production,” admits Corry. “If you stick with photography you will, at some point, realize that knowing how to handle your camera does not make you a photographer any more than knowing how to shift gears makes you a pro car driver. It is always about light – the quality and direction of it. Because perfect lighting doesn’t always come from the sun, utilizing the perfect companion (that beautiful flash!) that is so powerful in controlling images.”

Corry’s photographic passion is in boudoir, but she has always had a fascination and excitement about the idea of street photography which you can certainly see in her New York City collection.

Corry always had a yearning to become a photographer, but instead began her journey as a career counsellor. It was during this time, while counselling others to follow their dreams that she decided to take her own advice.
