The Cats football team had an exciting first home game opening the season against the Peace River Pioneers on Friday, September 6. The support the fans showed the Cats was remarkable. With a mix of new players and veterans, the Cats came together, held firm, and worked well as a team to take the win with only a mere 30 seconds left on the clock.
Unfortunately, Kai Wood #18 took the bench at the start of the game due to re-injuring his right knee but stayed close to cheer on his fellow teammates.
With a tense first quarter, both teams played aggressively with the Pioneers running more passing plays in an attempt to gain the upper hand while the Cats remained defensive. Wyatt Miller, #1 managed to score the first touchdown ending the quarter with a tie of 7-7. Into the second quarter, both teams again proved to be competitive and with only two minutes left on the board Jaden Dibben #10 went for the touchdown bringing the score to 13-7 for the Cats as the clock hit zero.
The Pioneers managed to step up their game into the third as the agility of their running back and tight defence gained them a touchdown with just over two minutes left closing the gap with a score of 13-14 to end the third quarter.
The final quarter had not only the players feeling the tension but kept fans on the edge of their seats with the Pioneers changing strategies and focusing more on the defensive line. Having the score so close, it was anyone’s game, and that one point behind only made the Cats more determined. Very few yards were gained from both sides during the last couple of minutes. The clock was ticking down and with only 30 seconds left of the game, Kenneth Zadderey found his opening and ran for it making a touchdown and field goal to end the game at 20-14 with a victory win for the Cats.
