On Saturday night, the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue made a stop in Whitecourt as part of its cross-Canada tour. The Whitecourt Community Centre was hopping as attendees began arriving at 6:30 p.m. where they mingled and enjoyed refreshments provided by Orchard Café.
Arts & Culture Co-ordinator, Courtney Milford, and the many volunteers moved through the crowd in a cohesive dance accepting tickets and directing new arrivals with well-practiced hands. “We’re excited to be able to use the theatre,” said Courtney, who noted that past events have typically been commercial concerts in the Allan & Jean Millar Centre fieldhouse. It was a night that promised comedy, sass, and a large array of nipple tassels. “This is refreshing; something different for Whitecourt,” said attendee Leslee Jodry.
Once the audience was seated and hushed, the lights dimmed as performer Betsy Bottom Dollar stepped out into the spotlight in a sparkly mini dress and go-go boots. She welcomed the audience with a saucy smile and promised a show to make them laugh and swoon, and one that celebrated women of all shapes and ages.
The show opened with a 60s style Austin Powers number immediately elevating the energy in the room as the crowed whooped and clapped. The performers slid fluidly from one act to the next, from a sultry performance by Quiche Lorraine, to an upbeat song and dance number, all while clad in bedazzled garments. It was a celebration of the female form as costume pieces were shed. As the mostly-female crowd cheered on the body-bearing artists, there was a definite sense of women supporting women, and loving your body as it is.
After the show, the performers met with audience members to thank them for attending, and to take photos. They expressed that performing in a small town is always a delight as they are received with excitement and fresh eyes.
The Whitecourt Woodlands & Performing Arts Society would like to thank the many sponsors and volunteers who contributed to the event. The next show to be held at the Community Centre on Saturday, March 16 will be a 14+ musical titled The Arrogant Worms, from the writers of “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate.” Tables will be available for purchase and tickets are $35 per person.
