The Whitecourt and District Agricultural Society held its annual Christmas Market on November 19 and 20 at the Westward Hall on Highway 32. As one of the biggest markets in the area, it’s a big draw for both vendors and visitors especially those looking for a picture with Santa Claus. Over 70 tables filled the Westward Hall from end to end and 1,695 people came through the doors over the course of the entire weekend.
Attendance was down slightly from last year due partially to a winter blast that brought freezing rain on Saturday and snow on Sunday as well as a sore economy, too. “I think that regardless of the weather or the economy, the show was a big success,” said event organizer, Sharlene Munday, adding, “We can’t do this without our volunteers. We had St. Joe’s students helping us and Girl Guides, too. Even just random people who stepped up to help! That’s truly the spirit of Christmas, now isn’t it?” It sure is!
Speaking of helping, each year the market organizers graciously accept food bank donations as an entrance fee and each year the haul is impressive. Even with a slower economy this year and many people feeling the pinch, Whitecourt and area came out big time raising $1,574.55 and two truckloads worth of food for the local food bank. The generosity of the local residents in our corner of the world is heartwarming beyond words and very much appreciated.
A magical toy shop welcomed Santa seekers up onto the stage where Serena Lapointe Photography had another creative, extravagant, and colourfully festive backdrop awaiting them with tons of playful elves hidden amongst toys, fun Christmas signs, and presents. Over 200 families, including one from as far away as Calgary, stopped in for pictures with well over 450 people taking time to strike a pose with the jolly old fellow.
Malcolm Heaven, President of the Whitecourt and District Agricultural Society for the past six years, says it was another great year for the market. “We want to give a special shout out to Sharlene Munday and her family for all the hard work they did in setting up and running the market. They did a fantastic job yet again.”
Congratulations to the Ag Society on another wonderful and magic-filled Christmas market. Ho! Ho! Ho!
