Almost every month, staff at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre invite residents to join them for an evening of fun in the ATB Financial Fieldhouse. Sponsored by Tim Hortons, the Community Fun Nights always feature a different theme and a smorgasbord of activities to go along with it. On Saturday, May 12, the theme was Art Attack and the staff had quite a few options available. Whether the children wanted to colour on paper or on rocks, or weave together a neat pattern using chop sticks and colourful yarn, everything they needed was ready for them to use.
A busy weekend made for a smaller group but those there made the best of having extra room to maneuver doing multiple crafts each. Siblings Natalie and Nathaniel York really enjoyed working on their weaving craft together. “I’m putting loops around the chop sticks and I just keep going and going until it’s done,” said Natalie as she focused on her project. Her little brother was just as focused as he sat beside her.
At every Community Fun Night, the Tim Hortons Double Double inflatable obstacle course is set up and is always one of the most popular parts of the evening. Natalie, who will be turning nine in August, said the bouncy castle was the best part. Tim Hortons also provides some donuts and muffins for event goers to enjoy.
Aside from the crafts and bouncy castle, parents and children were also playing games including floor hockey, badminton, basketball, and even lacrosse. The next Community Fun Night is slated for Saturday, June 2 and will be a Superhero Party from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the AJMC. After that, the monthly fun night will take a short break for the summer months. Don’t worry, it will be back on schedule in the fall.
