Corn maze, a must on the to-do list

corn-maze-2useOne of fall’s must-do activities!  Full of twists, turns and dead ends, corn mazes provide some good old fashioned fun.  Just beyond Mayerthorpe, roughly eight miles up Highway 22, hang a right at Township Road 562 and you’ll come to the Deer Lodge Corn Maze and Paintball.  Last Wednesday, the Whitecourt Homeschool group spent the day at the four-acre maze, getting lost, hollering at friends from over the corn stalks, searching for hidden items, laughing loudly and having a fantastic time.

Owner Wes Kezar has been running the paintball portion of his Deer Lodge company for 15 years and opened the corn maze three years ago.  “We develop more each year.  This year we added a few camping sites and next year the plan is to add buildings to the paint ball run” said Wes, adding that he enjoys putting together something “that families can do together.”  “I’ve even had school classes come out” said Wes, “everyone can have fun at Deer Lodge.”  As a special touch, Wes created a scavenger hunt for his corn maze, hiding 16 items amidst the pathways, making it even MORE fun.  The pumpkin and boot proved elusive to many kids but everyone persevered in the end, scratching off every item on the list.

Also on location, Wes has a full service paintball shop providing enthusiasts of all ages, the equipment needed to play safely and a full concession to take a bite out of after running around the property.  Shouts of “gotcha” and “you can’t get me” could be heard as children and their parents splattered paint all over each other.  For the last three Saturday’s of October, Kezar will be holding a Halloween corn maze, that is not to be missed!
