Mrs. Hilger’s St. Joseph’s School class was feeling inspired by “We Day” founders Craig and Marc Kielburger who, 20 years ago, set out to free children and their families in developing countries from poverty and exploitation. As fate would have it, Corry Pepper subbed in the class and revealed that she would be heading to Arusha, Tanzania for three weeks in July to help malnourished babies and children left to die surviving on a flour/water paste (similar to play-doh) as their only food. At that moment the students decided they wanted to help the children of Arusha by helping Corry. They divided into groups and ran their own fundraising events including a bake sale and photo booth. Their hard work raised $959.70. Corry Pepper was moved to tears during the reveal on Wednesday afternoon and is very grateful for their support. Her journey starts on July 13 and funds raised by the students will help her bring diapers, antibiotics, formula, school supplies, and a few treats to share as well. Corry’s passion was sparked from Feed the Children commercials growing up. “I know this will change my life,” said Corry, adding that these children need support from outside their country because it is hard to get it from within. “They need our help.” Thanks to people like Corry Pepper and the students in Mrs. Hilger’s class, they will continue to receive the help they desperately need.
