Duchess Kate had ‘no idea’ sister Pippa was getting engaged

A royal surprise! It was reported that Pippa Middleton was "completely and totally surprised" when James Matthews got down on one knee and proposed, but it turns out she wasn't the only one in the family who didn't see this coming. Duchess Kate was reportedly in the dark, too. "She had no idea they were getting engaged so soon," the source told Us Weekly of Prince William's wife, adding that the engagement news was "totally unexpected." But, that doesn't mean that Kate isn't thrilled for her younger sister. "Kate is so happy for Pippa," the source said. "She knows how much this means to her and how much she loves James." On Tuesday, Pippa stepped out with her beautiful engagement ring, given to her during a romantic proposal in England's Lake District. From the looks of it, the center stone on her vintage-looking sparkler is presumed to be "a 4 carat Asscher cut diamond," according to the creative director of 77 Diamonds, David Allen, via the Daily Mail. Jewelry concierge Neil Geddes called the piece "art deco inspired," but "likely contemporary made." Pippa and her hedge fund manager love released a statement following their engagement, announcing that they plan to tie the knot in 2017. "Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr. James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17, and plan to marry next year." Her sister also commented on the big news in a message from Kensington Palace. "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are absolutely delighted with the news." Likewise, Pippa's dad Michael Middleton spoke on behalf of himself and his wife in regards to his daughter's plans to get hitched. "Carole [Middleton] and I are absolutely thrilled with the news," he wrote. "They make a wonderful couple and we wish them every happiness together." It seems that Michael Middleton was one of only a few people who knew what was coming down the pipeline. The day that the engagement news was reported, a source told the Daily Mail, "James is a traditionalist and very much wanted to do things properly. That meant getting his future father-in-law's consent."
