Its official, spring has sprung and Eastlink Park is closing its doors to snowboarders, skiers, and tubers. Eastlink Park staff and Whitecourt Woodlands Winter Recreation Park Society members would like to extend a huge thank-you to the individuals, families, and school groups who came to check out this new recreational hotspot. Mother Nature wasn’t easy on the park in its inaugural year, however, we still have many successes to report on. Here are some quick facts from the park over the (very first) 2015/2016 season:
- Open from: Dec 18, 2015 – March 29th, 2016
- 5,500 skier visits (plus 1700 tubing visits), and with a very short season for the park due to milder winter Eastlink Park is aiming for 10,000 skier visits next year, as long as conditions are more normal for our region.
- Lots of snowboarding and ski lessons were provided, including for many large school groups
- Day Pass visitors from:
- Whitecourt & Woodlands: 4021
- Mayerthorpe: 51
- Fox Creek: 33 o Swan Hills: 26 o Edson: 143
- Yellowhead County: 31
- Barrhead: 16
- Edmonton Area: 53 o Out of province: 16 o Other: 69
Eastlink Park is being operated by a non-profit society and as such, the intent was never to make money, but rather to offer the most affordable winter sport experience possible for individuals and families in the area as well as visitor to our communities. Our sponsors are truly the ones who’ve made this project a reality. Through their contributions and the contributions of future sponsors, we will continue with reasonable prices, expand our services and grow in the future. The society is thrilled with the first year results which not only include the above numbers but also the many smiling faces of the children who learned how to ski or board this year and the families who spent time together enjoying this great outdoor sport!
If you didn’t get a chance to try the park this year, don’t worry, we’re already gearing up for the 2016/2017 season! Season passes are already on sale at last year’s prices and can be purchased at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre now that Eastlink Park is closed.
