Shortly after nine in the morning on Tuesday, February 20 staff, students, and family poured into the gym at École St. Mary School for the monthly School Spirit Day assembly. Each month, teachers take the opportunity to recognize students for their personal successes and positive behaviours. “We always have a theme associated with each assembly such as Superhero Day, Halloween, or something fun,” explained KQ Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Natillie Quaife. “This month was Twin Day, so students got to dress up like a friend or someone they admire or look up to.”
During the assembly, teachers presented ABC Awards which stands for Academic Excellence, Excellent Behaviour, and Good Christian Attitude to students who stood out as being especially deserving of the recognition that month. Each teacher at École St. Mary School awards three students from their classroom. “Receiving an ABC award gives students a sense of pride for being recognized as someone who has been working hard and who is kind to their peers.”
That morning, Natillie awarded Rowan Linde for his academic excellence, Braxton Steiger-Sarivi for his excellent behaviour and Juan Delos Reyes for his good Christian attitude. After sharing with the whole assembly, why each student was chosen for each award, the boys made their way to the front of the gymnasium to proudly receive their certificates.
“The students who are recognized by their teachers enjoy receiving the recognition and the certificates. Also, parents enjoy coming and seeing their children’s excitement and they, too, are very proud of their kids,” said Natillie, smiling.
Assemblies take place each month except September and December and are a great way to bolster self-esteem and pride in students. Not only does receiving a certificate give a personal boost but students get to acknowledge their fellow students and friends which strengthens the relationships between students. The next School Spirit Day will be taking place March 15 and students are asked to wear green.
