Excellent intro to future careers with Gateway Summer Boot Camp

by Susan Hofforth

There is an exciting opportunity to earn high school credits and learn about the careers of the future coming up with this summer’s Gateway Academy Summer Boot Camp. For two weeks, students can learn a bit more about what they might like to pursue after high school and get a head start.

In partnership with Alberta Labour, the Town of Whitecourt, Community Futures, Woodlands County and Living Waters Schools, NGPS is proud to introduce the following unique and challenging Summer Boot Camp experiences for all students currently in Grades 9-12, not just NGPS students. All classes will be held at Hilltop Jr/Sr High School in Whitecourt within the first two weeks of July.

The courses are not free, but the cost to the participants is only a $25 deposit that will be returned on completion of the course. “We are only collecting the deposit only to hold a place in the course,” said Lisa Bakos. “Thanks to the generosity of our funders we are able to offer this exciting opportunity at no cost to the students.” The costs involved are mostly to pay the instructors who are being brought in from industry.

There are some very exciting opportunities on offer. The Culinary Arts class will be taught by a Red Seal Chef from NAIT. There is a coding class for those who want to learn how to build an app. Other classes include Class 1 Truck Driver Training, First Aid for Animals, Robotics, Cisco Network building, and another looks at the vast number of career options within the medical and first aid fields. Students can receive between 1 and 5 credits for these courses

Classes are filling up but there are still many places. Check out Gateway Academy Summer Boot Camps on the NGPS website.
