The first ever, Whitecourt Wolverines Ladies Night was held at the St. Joseph’s Hall on Friday January 26, with a sold-out crowd of over 200 women in attendance. The evening featured the Dueling Pianos, Michaela Clarke and a rambunctious auction featuring players as waitstaff, all in support of the local team.
#26, assistant captain, Jaedon Leslie, was the first player to be auctioned off, with the help of XM 105 personality, Ethan VanVaals manning the microphone and encouraging the crowd to be generous. Other players that were auctioned off included, #22 Yannik Bertrand, #18 Spencer Bast, #14 Stevie Bryant and goalie, Xavier Potvin. Each player brought in anywhere from $100-$400 each. Being good sports, they brought beverages and food to their tables throughout the evening.
Vice-president of the Whitecourt Wolverines and event organizer, Tracy Stark, said the idea of the event came from an unlikely source. “Coach Gord, actually gave us the idea because they did a night like this in Lloydminster and it was really good there, so we thought we would bring it here. It’s going to be amazing. We’ve sold out!”
The point of the night is for women to be around women. “I think that women have lots on their plates and they’re always busy running around for their families and their kids and husbands. It’s a night for them to just relax and be with their girlfriends and have fun. It’s about sticking together to be empowered and standing up together as women. I think that tonight will be one of those events.” explained Tracy.
An extra bit of fun could be found in the church lobby, where there were tables of donations for attendees to bid on, including a spa package, jewellery, luscious bath baskets and a tv. “We have lots of great donations that were given. We also have a purse auction. There’s four purses and one of the purses has a trip to Vegas inside, with flight and hotel included.”
All the players took part in the event in some way, whether they were auctioned off, working the various food and beverage tables, or leading guests to their tables. The evening was truly put on by the entire organization, with all levels helping, either before, during or with clean up after the fact.
“We’re hoping we hit it off tonight and every year it’ll get better and better. We put a lot of time into this, so I just hope that everybody loves it, like we do! It’s beautiful in here and it’s something we’ve never done. It doesn’t look like a Wolverine event at all and I would love to thank people for coming, and for travelling on the roads to get here and for supporting our hockey team. We have the best community, ever, for that. Thank you!”
