Fox Creek commissions new mural

By Laura Bohnert

Fox Creek is taking strides to bring art back to its community — starting with the water tower mural project.

The Town of Fox Creek council has approved the commissioning of a new mural which, already in progress, will appear on the curved face of the water tower in Fox Creek’s residential area, on the corner of Hammond Drive and 4th Avenue.

The mural, which will be visible to most when entering Fox Creek’s residential area, is being completed by Flying Colours Mural and Design, a privately held Edmonton company, and looks to reach completion by September 14, 2015.

In its completion, the mural will reach a maximum size of 24 feet tall and 60 feet wide.

According to the proposal to town council, the goal of the water tower mural project is to start bringing art back into the community in order to make Fox Creek a more attractive and “liveable” space.

“Art is something our community has been lacking,” quotes Kristen Milne, Assistant Chief Administration Officer for the Town of Fox Creek. “The mural is an important starting point. It brings a sense of community pride to the town and its citizens, and it helps us move towards our goal — the beautification of the town — but it also enhances art and culture which is something we are working on growing as a community.”

“The mural features wildlife and nature,” Milne continues. “It portrays fishermen, moose, deer, and some other critters. We believe it highlights what Fox Creek has to offer: a connection to nature and an intense natural beauty.”

Funding for the project has been provided by Chevron, which donated $15,000 towards the project. The remainder of the cost is being covered by the Town of Fox Creek.

“We are currently working on a project that will help local businesses get involved in the mural project,” Milne adds. “That project is still underway, and we aren’t sure exactly what it will look like yet,” so keep an eye on www.foxcreek.ca for more information about how you can get involved in bringing art back to Fox Creek.
