Free Wi-Fi on the go

By Rechell McDonald
All Whitecourt Transit users will now get to benefit from access to free Wi-Fi. The hope is that transit users will both enjoy their ride more, and be able to make every ride a productive one. The free Wi-Fi allows users to check emails, research, or just surf the Web without having to use up their own data plan. As recent news of government crackdowns on major cellular service providers and ‘unreasonable’ charges hits the news, getting free Wi-Fi where we can is very welcome.
In the last few years, government mandates have eliminated three-year service contracts for all new users, and is slowly helping those who are still stuck in these contracts get out of them early without extra charges. These initial changes have spurred additional change to occur in the way service providers are billing, resulting in a cap on roaming fees and surcharges for things like going over your data limit. All good news, and Whitecourt Transit’s shift to offer free Wi-Fi on route is just another way we can ease the stress on our data plans – and wallets.
Also new to Whitecourt Transit this summer are youth transit passes. Available for those seven to17 years of age through July and August, these discounted passes will make it more affordable for young riders to get where they are going. Youth passes can be obtained through the Allan & Jean Millar Centre.
