Hard work and solid play by the River Dogs

The Whitecourt Bantam AA River Dogs were in action over the weekend with games on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, July 22, the team played at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (pictured) while on Sunday they played during lunch hour.

Jay Nicholls, first year coach with the team, said the season has been one for learning.  “We have a lot of kids who are new to the game. Some haven’t played ball in a long time or ever, and we have a new coach, too, so definitely a learning season.”

Though the team has new players, Nicholls said, “The kids have progressed really well and I’m very pleased with the way they’ve developed.” On July 29 and 30, the River Dogs will be heading to Elk Point for the end-of-year provincials where they will battle it out in their tier. Coach Nicholls said the whole team is looking forward to it. “We should have a good competitive weekend.”

Eleven kids aged 14 and 15 made up the team this year. The season runs from the beginning of May to the end of July provincials. To stay up to date with the team or for registration information for next season, follow Whitecourt Minor Ball on Facebook.
