Writer, activist, and inspirational speaker Kamal Dhillon is set to appear at the Whitecourt Family Violence Initiative’s annual dinner. The dinner is put on to raise money for the Family Violence Initiative, a local organization that raises awareness about domestic abuse and family violence. This year, the dinner will be held on Thursday, October 1 at St. Joseph’s Hall.
Kamal Dhillon has travelled around North America talking about her experiences at the hands of an abusive husband. She spent years suffering abuse at the hands of her husband and years trying to escape. Now free of her abuser, Dhillon frequently discusses the difficult journey that follows traumatic experiences. Her story and recovery led to a book, Black & Blue Sari, which has earned her numerous awards.
Started in 2011, the Family Violence Initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about family violence in Whitecourt and the surrounding areas. Members are dedicated to educating people about abuse and how to access necessary resources. Since domestic abuse and family violence are often left unreported and undiscussed, groups like the Family Violence Initiative perform an essential service for both educating people and helping those in need.
Tickets for the 4th Annual Family Violence Awareness Dinner are $25 each and are still available at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre. For more information, call 780-778-3637 ext. 0.
