September 26 and 27th were the last official races for the Western Alberta Motorsports Association mud bogs. With two previous cancellations in Whitecourt, one due to covid restrictions, the other due to flooding, Saturday and Sunday’s races were long awaited for by the approximately 90 racers.
The Association hosts races in many different locations such as Rimbey, Wembley, Forestburg, High Prairie, Valemont, Peace River, Edson, and Whitecourt. Organizer of the Whitecourt races, Brandon Murray, was pleased to finally host the mud bog races at the Westward Community grounds. Brandon Murray commented, “We have had to reschedule the dates a couple times now but were happy we finally got to this point.” Murrary added, “After the flooding we had to bring in fill for the runways due to the extreme water washing the dirt away.”
Racer where from across Alberta, some from as far as BC. There were 5 classes for the mud bogs, E,D,C,B and A. The event also had quad and Lawn Mower races. From old to young, everyone seemed to be involved. A food truck was on location and camping was available for weekend event goers.
Braving the windy conditions, Whitecourt local, Rosemary Aginas cheered on her spouse Les Curd who was in the A category, running his 1994 GMC K 1500, called Papa’s Toy. Les Curd, who participates in the circuit, has local sponsors, S&S Muffler, Smyl Chevrolet, Eagle River Casino and Vital Signs.
Spectators cheered as mud was flung through the air and hitting them from the force of the racer tires. It was an exciting event to witness. Winners of the race were not available at the time of this press release.
