Library to host Strange movie night for teens

By Reed Clements

The Whitecourt and District Public Library is hosting a free movie night for teenagers on Thursday, 27 April, featuring the new Marvel film Doctor Strange.

The Library, which is located on 49th Street, will host teenagers for an evening of free entertainment, including free popcorn and drinks, from 6 to 8 p.m. that night.

Doctor Strange is yet another Marvel entry in the exploding superhero film genre. By all accounts, however, this film differentiates itself from the trope-heavy, overly polished style of other superhero films by providing audiences with bizarre visual effects and a mind-bending plot.

The film received largely positive reviews when it was released in theatres in November, and set the record for the highest-grossing opening of all time in IMAX theatres.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular Doctor Strange, a neurosurgeon who discovers spirituality, magic, and alternate dimensions, becoming a superhero in the process. He stars alongside Ciwetel Ejiofor and Canada’s own Rachel McAdams.

The film draws its main character from the long-running comic books who was created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in the early 1960s. By bringing Strange from the page and onto the big screen, Doctor Strange introduces him into the Marvel Comic Universe, meaning that Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Doctor Strange is now likely to appear in future Avengers films.

The Whitecourt and District Public Library offers numerous services, including free internet access and programs such as the upcoming Adult Art Therapy event on April 30th. The Library also hosts many different kinds of free movie events, including a Children’s Movie event every Saturday, and a Teen Movie Night once a month.
