Whitecourt soccer players took to the field for regular travel team match-ups on Saturday, May 13. The U12 girls’ team played at Rotary Park and the U18 boys’ team held their games at Graham Acres. Teams played at least twice and on the U12 side, teams from Edson and Jasper took part against local squads.
Soccer players hit the field rain or shine and are known for powering through in cool weather. The teams certainly proved that to be true as they continued to play in the chilly and rainy weather. A line-up of umbrellas and tents could be seen along the field as parents cheered on their troopers.
Each weekend, travel teams take part in season play against nearby communities. Upcoming events for the girls’ U12 team are the Sherwood Park Tournament which falls on the weekend of May 27 and the Camrose Night Classic planned for the first weekend of June. The Camrose event is one of the most popular events amongst both players and their families as it takes place at night under the lights. Players describe it as lots of fun and something completely different from their regular events.
The soccer season started at the beginning of May and will run through until the beginning of July. Once the regular season ends the provincials will begin for all teams who make the cut.
