The red carpet at the Golden Globes looks very different this year. Actors are hitting the carpet in black to show their support for the Time’s Up movement, a coalition of more than 300 women in Hollywood that aims to take action against sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace. The movement comes after more than 90 women accused movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, ultimately creating what’s now known as the “Weinstein effect,” an ever-expanding list of sexual assault accusations against other powerful people in the entertainment industry. The objective of Time’s Up, the supporters of which include (but isn’t limited to) Tracee Ellis Ross, America Ferrera and Reese Witherspoon and at least 300 more, is to create solidarity between women across all industries in the fight against workplace inequality and harassment. In order to sign the letter of solidarity, celebrities and regular folk (a.k.a. us) alike must donate to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which will provide “subsidized legal support to women and men who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace and while in pursuit of their careers.” Obvi finding something all noir *and* all original can get kind of tricky, so some designers have had to think on their feet. Christian Siriano told Pret-a-Reporter that he had to, “re-cut two custom pieces and change them to black.” Aside from donning black head to toe, Time’s Up buttons are being distributed on the red carpet, and some stars have even asked the fashion brands they’re wearing to donate to the Legal Defense Fund. Several familiar famous faces encouraged everyone—including those watching from home—to wear black in solidarity and share their pics on social with the hashtag #WhyWeWearBlack, which has been trending since before the red carpet kicked off.
